The city of Springfield has many nicknames. It is affectionately known as "the City of Firsts" due to its numerous innovations. Since basketball, the 2nd most famous sport in the world, was invented in the city, it also has the nickname of "Hoop City."

Hartford, Connecticut, the capital city of Connecticut is only 23.9 miles or 38.5 km south of Springfield. It is situated on the western bank of the Connecticut River. Bradley International Airport is the one people of Springfield use. This airport is operated and owned by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The airport is also called the Hartford-Springfield Airport since it lies the same distance between the two cities.

The region referred to as the Knowledge Corridor is the Hartford-Springfield region. This site hosts over 160,000 university students. There are more than thirty-two liberal arts universities and colleges within this corridor, making it the 2nd highest concentration of higher learning institutions in the USA. Some of the famous institutions include Springfield Technical Community College, Western New England University, Springfield College, the University of Massachusetts Amherst's School of Urban Design and American International College, amongst many others.

The city is known across the globe as the birthplace for basketball. James Naismith, theology graduate, invented the sport during the year 1891, at the now Springfield College, which was called the YMCA International Training School back then. He invented the game to be able to fill in the gap between the football and baseball seasons. The Mason Square district of the city is where the very first game of basketball ever played occurred.

The top economic businesses in the city include Transportation and Trade; Health and Education Services, Hospitality and Tourism; Manufacturing; and lastly, Government. The economy is considered a "mature economy." To some degree, this protects the city during recessions and inhibits it somewhat. Springfield is said to have one of the top emerging multi-cultural markets within the country. Springfield has a prominent 33% Latino population with buying power that has increased from the year 1990 to the year 2006 over 295%. During the past 20 years, over 60% of Hispanic Springfielders have arrived and now call Springfield home.
